Hopi Ear Candles

Bad press:

It would be hard to find any alternative, or even pharmaceutically tested treatment, that didn’t receive bad press at some point.

Lately the negative image of ear candling has become more mainstream, so I thought I would offer some insight in to my experiences verses the negativity.

What the Media have say

My experience

Wax from the candle could get into the ear!

I have always used candles and cones that have filters, and never burn past the marked line, I have never had an issue with the wax of the candle getting into the ear.

Professionals lie when they say the wax in the candle is from your ear

This is a common misconception, the wax inside the candle after treatment is not from the ear, not all professionals are under this delusion!

They are likely to cause allergic reactions

It is possible that you could be allergic to the wax used, however I have never had this experience.

There is a high risk of severe burns

Whilst I have never been burned by an ear candle, ash does sometimes fall, which is why it is important to protect your client from this risk; that said, some ear cones are now made with Soy which has a lower burn temperature than the traditional Bees wax. However, it is possible that some manufacturers may use Paraffin wax which burns at around 17 C higher than Bees wax, and therefore results a higher risk of severity if you somehow came into contact with falling ash.

They are too big or small to be placed in the ear

It is recommended not to place any object deep into the ear, due to the risk of damage, or compacting the ear wax. The candle should sit snugly in the opening, and not be forced beyond the visible area of the ear. again, I have never had any issues from using the ear candles on clients. It is worth noting that they are not recommended for use where there is any sign infection, or existing damage to the ear drum.

In conclusion, I would strongly advice against home treatments, always see a professional when seeking Thermo auricula treatments (Ear candling), to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with treatment.

Note for Professionals: look out for signs of paraffin use in your candles (smell is usually one of the first signs), always follow the appropriate training advice.[NK1]
