Breathing; why is it important in meditation
As many people looking into meditation will know, it offers some wonderful effects on the body;
did you know that simply taking time to breathe can also have some great effects?
How to breathe
During meditation we are encouraged to breathe in a pattern, this pattern;
Breath in
Breath held
Breath out
Breath paused
When you first begin meditation try equal parts for a count of between 4 and 6. As you become used to this try holding for a little longer, along with make the out breath longer and slower than the in breath, your pause should be the shorter part, and only to what is comfortable for you. Experiment and do what works for you, keep trying to improve over time.
The aim is to be able to sense your breath, and have a positive natural way of breathing, that doesn’t require regular thought regarding how you breathe.
This is not about getting it right or wrong, it’s about providing for your body in the best way that you can.
Why breathe this way?
This method helps to create aerobic respiration, the preferred method of respiration for creatures living in oxygen rich environments.
Aerobic respiration involves the use of oxygen to create energy and provides more energy at the end of its cycle than anaerobic respiration
Respiration types
The alternative to aerobic respiration is anaerobic respiration, this is used when the body doesn’t have enough oxygen for aerobics respiration.
Both types require Glucose and involve a chain reaction;
aerobic respiration produces more energy with less negative waste by products, compared to anaerobic respiration which produces less energy and also created the by-product ‘lactic acid’ in humans; a product which causes muscles to become ridged, effecting the way they work and feel (muscular tension). Making aerobic respiration the preferred method all round.
Summary
So, when you meditate, or just in everyday life; try to aim for a breath which allow aerobic respiration. If you fall into bad habits, don’t panic, our bodies are amazing and can adapt to this by working on anaerobic respiration, whilst you find your rhythm again.
I will add more about the importance of Meditation and self healing over time, so please keep an eye on the blog, for updates.
